My mother taught me a lot of things. One of the things she taught me was how to sew. Not just the mechanics of it, but she also transferred her love of it to me. She had a passion for it. When I was little, she would give me her button box and a piece of string and let me make button necklaces on the floor beside her while she sewed. I would come home from school in the afternoon and almost always she would be sitting at her sewing machine. She would sing as she sewed – mostly her favorite hymns.
She made clothing for her own mother, herself, her children, and her grandchildren. She made my wedding dress and my sister’s too. She made maternity clothes for me when I was expecting and then she made baby bibs, baby blankets and baby clothes. She made Halloween costumes and prom dresses. She made curtains, tablecloths, tote bags, gift bags, potato bags, wallets, potholders and placemats among many, many other things.
She sewed – a lot. But that’s not all of her. She was loving, kind, generous, helpful, patient, faithful, and good. My mom was good. And we loved her.
My mom passed away yesterday. Heaven is happy, and we are sad. Say hello to everyone for us, Mama and save us a spot. We love you.
