Lost Things – Part I of III

Everyone loses things. I guess it’s just part of life. Tools get misplaced. Keys drop out of pockets. Change falls out of purses. Gloves, hats and scarves go missing. A lot of the time, they are just things. Other times you have a special attachment to them. Who knows why? You just do.

Here I share with you three stories of lost things. Were these things really lost or just misplaced? You decide.

When my son was about 5 years old, he had a soft plush toy seal. I don’t remember how he acquired it; it could have been a gift. For some reason, this seal had a special appeal to him. He named it Sammy after the seal in one of his favorite books, Sammy the Seal. It seemed like whenever he had stuffed animals that he especially loved, he wanted them to have clothes.

Now making clothes for dolls is one thing. Sewing them is kind of like sewing for miniature people. Sewing for teddy bears is pretty much the same with some proportion adjustments. But a seal has no legs and it’s pretty much all neck. When my son approached his grandmother with his idea of clothing for Sammy, you can imagine that she had to be creative. I think she ended up making Sammy some pajamas. I keep hoping I’ll come across a photo of Sammy in his pj’s but the only thing I have managed to locate so far is this one. I think this is Sammy pictured here with a bear I made for my son when he was about two. I’ll bet you are wondering why we took this picture. I was always taking photos of the bears and animals I had made. He thought the ones he loved should be photographed too. So we did.

One day my son came up to me and asked me where Sammy was. It was the first I had heard that he had gone missing. We looked high and low and I asked him the requisite, “Where did you have him last?” type of questions. My son wasn’t terribly upset, but it bothered me a little. I wondered about Sammy’s whereabouts and his wellbeing. I know, silly me. I still think he’ll show up around here somewhere one of these days. It’s only been about 18 or so years. There’s still time.

To be continued . . .

  1. Oh no!
Is he warm, does he have food, is someone loving him?? You have to find Sammy.

  2. I had a dear sweet older friend who told me once that things stay with us while we need them, but when we no longer need them they go off to find another place that they are needed. Perhaps Sammy had somewhere else to be where he was more needed? Or perhaps he is just in hibernation somewhere until he is needed again. Maybe when you have grandchildren he will reappear at that perfect moment.

I rarely lose anything, but I have this bracelet that I used to wear all the time. It had a faulty clasp and I was constantly losing it. But yet it always managed to find it's way back to me. Sometimes in some pretty strange ways.

    Hugs, Kelly
