Summer's Last Hurrah

Years ago, when I was much younger, my mom and dad would load up our trusty station wagon with supplies and all of us kids, hook up our pop-up camper to the trailer hitch, and take off for the beach. Winding through the back roads and little towns, we would ride and ride for what seemed like ages. They would endure the endless questions of “how much longer?” and “are we there yet?”. Sometimes when we were far from home but nowhere near our destination, I would pick a house along the route that looked interesting to me and ask my mom, “Who lives there?” Rather than say she didn’t know she would say something like “Mary Smith lives there and she has 7 children.” She would answer questions about Mary until something else came along to distract me. At last, when we got close to the coast, we became very excited. “Can you see the ocean yet?” “Do you see it?” “I think I see it!” “There, I see a bit of water.” “Did you see the ocean?” It was always an experience that filled me with wonder and awe. We all love the beach dearly.

Here we are many years later still celebrating summer with a trip, however brief, to the beach. It is our summer’s last hurrah. Packing up for college awaits my daughter, a return to the office awaits my husband and in my studio, the teddy bears are getting quite impatient for some new friends.

I do believe this particular spot is one of my favorite places in all the world . . . and it still fills me with awe.

Here are a few photos of the beach at dusk. I like the reflection of the pier in this picture and . . .

the reflection of my husband's feet in this one.

Even at dusk the colors are wonderful -

and there are some last holdouts enjoying the surf, a stroll or a shell.

In the early morning, the beach goers return as well as the seagulls looking to score a bread crumb.

I wasn't certain the weather would be nice with the threat of rain and storms, but you can see what a great day it turned out to be.

Even in my blissful state I couldn't forget you my friends.

Maybe I should have done my studio in these colors? Perhaps I'll just file this under "Paint Ideas for Next Time."

Warm sand, lovely breeze, rhythmic waves - could very well put you to sleep. Gosh I already miss it!

When the cold winter weather sets in, I'll come back to these photos and dream a little while.

  4. Absolutely lovely photos!
Our last hurrah isn't until the last week of August... I am so looking forward to the break!

I wish I lived closer to the ocean though, I love the smell and the taste of it... it's so different from all of these Great Lakes.
