Lizzie Fern – Part Two

It was just about this time last year when I shared the story of Lizzie Fern. Some of you may remember that post. I had been given a division from a fern that belonged to my grandmother, Elizabeth. She loved the plant and before moving into assisted living, she asked my aunt to look after it for her.

It’s not that I don’t love plants but my success had been fairly limited until recently. You can understand why I was a bit worried over the fate of this dear little thing. After all, it had a connection to my grandmother who had passed away quite a number of years ago. I really wanted it to survive.

When I brought it home, it looked like this.

And then we planted it in a pot and crossed our fingers.

When the weather turned cooler last fall, we brought it inside and put it by a window that received the morning sun. Lo and behold, it lived.

So, I’m quite hopeful that this will be the beginning of a nice fern that will continue to grow and grow. Maybe one day, I can pass it along to my children and tell them that it comes from a very, very old plant and the original belonged to their great-grandmother who was 98 years old when she left this world. Now if I’m 98 when I give it to them that will be a story!

  1. Very cool. I am without green thumb as well, so I understood why you feared for the little guy.

I'd say Lizzie has improved dramatically though!

  4. How great it lived! I am awful with plants but had a Boston Fern live for a good while and an African Violet that lived for almost two years! I think it is great that it belonged to your grandmother!
