It All Began with Those Dreaded Tan Lines by Sebastian

My fantastic idea had some humble beginnings. And I think that’s where I’ll start. You see when we went to the beach, I had some tan lines. You can see them in the photo below. I thought it was time to eliminate them by getting some sun.

There I was in the beach chair just lying around waiting for the sun to work its magic. I began to remember what it was like to be a king or at least wear a crown like one. This is me when I went to meet the princesses.

Then it got to be rather boring very quickly just sitting there. Instead of dreaming of being a king, I really wanted to be one. I am nothing if not a bear of action. That’s when I got started on my grand project - to build my very own castle.

Every king has to have a castle right? It’s not perfect but it’s all mine and it works.

People came from far and near to see it – well, sort of. See those people in the distance; I think they were intimidated by my royal presence. So while they really wanted to say hello, they were too much in awe to get very close.

Here’s a picture of me next to my castle. I’m sitting on my custom made throne.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering where my royal crown is. You are so funny; as if I would bring such a valuable jewel encrusted thing out on the beach!

As in any fairy tale of a king and his castle, there is always a big bad sea monster that wants to stomp on the kingdom and for a minute I thought I was a goner.

Then I realized it was only one of my loyal subjects and after I recovered from the frightening shock of her ginormous shadow, I made my first decree. “Clean up this mess! And - if you do a good job, I’ll let you bring me a chocolate chip cookie.”

Apparently, a king can be removed from the throne with very little warning – and no cookies either.

  1. Oh those tan lines are a right pain in the royal bear behind, you really need to avoid them. I'm not too sure about that whole sandcastle thing though, I'm still finding sand behind my ears and other unmentionable places after we played on the beach in Ireland, you really wouldn't want your royal throne to be so uncomfortable in the long run, trust me! Still, the staff did a good construction job for you, my staff didn't even bother to try and make one, she just sat me on rocks covered in mussels that could leap out and bite me! Well, she says they coudln't have bit me, but it wasn't HER sitting there, was it?! I think you were done on the cookie front...

    1. Hi Jack,

How did you get to be so wise? Did you have tan lines too? Ireland has sand? Who knew? But then, I haven't been to Ireland - not one of my royal holdings, you know. I will stay away from mussels. You know The Hulk has muscles and they are fierce! Yeah, I think you are right about the cookies. The power went to my head.

  2. Hi Sebastian,

Is that Miss Ginger's shadow? I bet it is.

I don't play in the sand when we go to the beach - it makes me feel icky - I'm a girl, you know, and I don't like getting dirty or sandy. But I love you castle, Castle Sebastian - wow, that means you are royalty.

    1. Hi Prudence,

Yes, that is her shadow. Don't you think it would have scared you? You are such a sweet bear to say such nice things. You can come to my castle and play anytime. (Although, it's probably not there anymore with the tides and all.)

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  3. Oh my Excellency Sebastian, I think you have the grandest castle in the world. You had me tricked, thinking your mum very carefully carved out all those letters, to tell the world it was your castle. In the distance I saw moulds of letters. What a fabulous idea. just e careful of that burn.

    1. Hi Kays Kids,

Thank you! Thank you! Nah, she's not that good. Oooh, don't tell her I said that. Sometimes my mouth runs away with me like it did the day of the castle building. Yes, I used molds and it is still hard work but in the end, it turned out okay. I'm fine - no fur burns just a nice sweet glow of sunshine.

    1. Hi Heather,

Yes,you are so right! Peasants! Oops - that power thing really does a number on my head. Time to think humble again and remember that I have the heart of a teddy bear. (Albeit, a royal heart!)

    1. Hi Heather,

Oh my! What an adventure! I'm glad it all worked out in the end though. I'm going to put a link to the story here and maybe someone else will enjoy reading it as much as I did.

  6. sebastian,
i love it when you post. i print them out and then when i have several i will read them to my granddaughter for her naptime when i am watching her. she is quite impressed with you, as well she should be. she tries to get her little brother interested in you, but he is only 9 months old and doesn't seem to understand your granduer. we have hope for him though. rowen, my granddaughter, wants grandmama to make her a sebastian just like you. i've explained this is quite impossible. that there could never be another sebastian. so she wants me to make her a tiny bear like you. she seems to think her grandmama can make anything. i have never made a bear. especially not a miniature bear. she is just going to have to be happy with your posts!

    1. Hi Terri Sue,

I am glad that you and your granddaughter like reading about my crazy adventures. Please tell her that I love love love little girls who love little bears like me. Give Rowen a big kiss for me. If you make a bear for her, you must send me pictures because one can never have too many bear friends. And yes, grandmas can make anything sometimes you just need a bit of convincing. I have lots of brothers and cousins and maybe even a sister or two out there in the world but they are not as wordy as I am. Enjoy and thanks for reading!

      hugs to you and Rowen,
      Sebastian

  7. Hi Sebastian! Your sand castle looked like an amazing palace! So sorry your reign didn't last long - that power thing can really grab hold of one. Maybe it is more fun to have loyal friends than loyal subjects, anyway. The friends can spare more cookies! :)

    1. Hi Kay Joy,

Well, thank you even though you and I can both see that it only has the one room and it's only big enough for me. Yeah, I've learned about the power thing and I think you are absolutely spot on about the loyal friends. If things go belly up around here, I can just bellyache with the rest of my friends rather than being responsible for fixing it. You do get more cookies with a crowd of friends and it's more fun too!

      hugs,
      Sebastian

    1. Hi Miss Cheryl of Bingle Bears,

I'm glad that I made you giggle. Although it took me a minute to figure out I had crossed a line - got a little power hungry there for a second. Anyway, I'm sure you are right and hope you and all your bears and girls are doing good these days.

      hugs,
      Sebastian
