“He won’t eat you, I promise.”

Sebastian here to tell you about my encounter with a ginormous Labrador retriever.

I was told that we were going to see a big dog. She said, “He won’t eat you, I promise.” I’ve heard that before.

I was sitting peacefully, enjoying the sunshine on this big rock waiting to meet the animal when she asked me, “Well, what do you think?”

It all began to remind me of two fairy tales. One of which was Little Red Riding Hood when she looks at the wolf and says, “My, what big eyes you have.”

hweyip_2

The other fairy tale it made me think of was The Gingerbread Man. Remember when he wants to go across the river and the fox tells him to get on his back and he’d carry him across? Then he tells him to climb up on his head as the water rises.

Eventually he says climb up on my nose and we all know what happened to the Gingerbread Man after that. It certainly didn’t make me feel very confident.

But if you look at this photo of me sitting on his big stick, he looks like he’s smiling. I kept saying “Nice doggie. Nice, nice doggie.”

I like looking at him from way back here the best of all. Way, way back here.

    1. Hi Miss Lady Sharon,

I can tell you that I didn't feel brave but looking back now, yeah, I guess I was. Thank you for pointing that out!

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  2. That was a good dog indeed, Sebastian. It was as Ginger promised – he didn't even try to eat you! So is there a chance you'd be friends?

    1. Hi Val,

He really didn't even move so I guess he was in the 'stay' mode! We could possibly be pen pals - if he was in a pen, I might be his pal? Ha ha. Only kidding. Yeah, he was a big loveable pup.

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  3. 'It won't eat you', I've heard that one before too! LT had me sitting on a huge metal monster in Provence last year, it fried my bum, what with it being metal and it being over 40C out there that day! Honestly, you just can't get the staff these days.

    1. Hi Jack,

Tell me about it! I know what you mean - about getting staff these days. I won't even ask about your fried bum but I hope you're much recovered with all those soft and cushy fabrics and quilts. If not, time for new staff!

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  4. Hi Sebastian,

Now that is a big puppy. Oh, we have a Lab (Jessie) and we call her a gentle giant. They are very kind, loving and gentle. Please don't be "ascared".

That is a bee-u-tee-ful sculpture, do you know where you were when Miss Ginger took those pictures?

    1. Hi Prudence,

I'm pretty sure your Jessie isn't as big as this guy was. Even so, I trust you know what you are talking about. I've seen photos of Jessie and she does look very loveable. I do know where we were. We were in front of the vet school. They even had places for horses and cows there! Woof back to Molly Brown and Jessie from me please.

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  6. What a huge dog. I know how you would have felt Sebastian, FRIGHTENED!!!! Now I want you to listen. Did you see he didn't have a body, so that means he has no tummy. And... that means he couldn't eat you because there would be no place for you to go.... So now don't have bad dreams about it.

    1. Hi Kays Kids and Wilbur,

It's nice to get a little empathy around here. Thank you. Oh you know, I didn't see that he didn't have a body. I just thought it was hidden. All I could see was his ginormous teeth holding onto that ginormous stick. I feel much better now. Thanks again - Wilbur!

      hugs,
      Sebastian

    1. Hi Miss Heather,

You may have a point but then if was in the middle of a lake people might think it was a loch ness monster sort of thing. I do see a resemblance there so perhaps you are onto something. Also, I'd never get that close to it in a lake. Hm-m-m-m. Food for thought.

Thank you! I think you might be right - even though he would probably think we were playing!

  9. Oh my, I have never seen anything quite like that before! He looks friendly enough, but you are a brave bear for sitting on that thing's head. If my dog knew what that was supposed to be, he would have run the other way! He's terrified of dogs, whether it is a Chihuahua or a Labrador. :)

  10. Hi Miss Kay Joy,

Yeah, it...it...can be quite a - um - surprise when you see it for the first time. I'd like to take credit for being brave but sometime I don't get much say in these matters. I suppose the brave part comes in when I don't run off, huh? Speaking of running, your dog might know something the rest of us don't. Perhaps we should watch and learn? Thanks for reading!

    hugs,
    Sebastian

  11. Ha, you scaredy custard you. I've been almost that close to a tiger or two and I wasn't scared at all. I hear Alan saying I got well down into his waistcoat pocket, but that's a rotten lie. I was thumbing my nose at that big cat so there.

Anyway as Prudence can tell you worst treatment you'll get from a retriever is a big lick, and as that one is stone that's not likely. You should be more brave.

    1. Hi Jock,

I'm glad you stopped by to share your point of view. It's very helpful to us less well traveled bears. I've always found a little fear, a little well chosen caution, can sometimes be useful. I might even try your technique and call hiding out...I mean hanging out in a pocket a smart offensive move. :D

      My admiration to you,
      Sebastian

    2. Hi Sebastian,

I have to say sorry for my cheeky friend Jock. He knows that the tigers would have had him for a pre-snack snack, but having some bravado makes him feel less scared.

      Hugs,

      Alan
