All they do is hang.

If you were looking at my Christmas tree right now – right this very minute – these are a few of the ornaments you would see. Just looking at them, they are only ornaments – nothing more. All they do is hang. That is until you find out the story behind them.

Take for instance this one.

My son cross-stitched ornaments for each of us one year. This one was mine. The funny thing is he needed help sewing the front to the back so I helped him work it out for all the ornaments, except the one he made for me which he wanted to manage on his own so he could surprise me. He was very careful about the subject matter.

And in this next photo:

See the beaded angel on the left? A friend of my mother’s made one for my mom and each of her daughters. It was very thoughtful. The little angel with the red collar is part of a set of very, very old ornaments we found at the Flea Market here. They make a sweet tinkle-y sound. The miner with the blue cap is also part of a set that my boyfriend (future husband) and I bought together long before we decided to get married.

This beaded snowflake – now how could that possibly be anything more than a simple handmade ornament? Those beads came from the sweater that my mom was wearing just before she passed away. It gets stored in a box with her photo on it from year to year.

The tongue depressor snowman was made by my daughter when she was just a little thang! We have several ornaments that show tiny hands’ creativity. The Native American-made moccasin hanging just to the right of it was purchased a long time ago when my husband and I were in the mountains as a memento of our visit.

Then there are lots and lots of bear ornaments, usually gifts from friends that also adorn the tree.

On another note, I am still sewing bears. Special requests and such. I’d show them here but then someone somewhere might get a sneak peek at their Christmas gift and we can’t have that. My mother was the queen of secrecy when she was sewing Christmas gifts. I expect she would hope I would also be able to keep a secret this time of year.

Now that December and all its trappings have truly and thoroughly arrived, I hope you are enjoying the season. Thank you for spending time with us here at bearbits!

  1. Hi Ginger, I love your decorations, It is just like my tree. Lots of things children have made me, and lots of very special memories of friends from long ago. This is what makes a tree in my opinion. Not the designer trees you see in magazines.
