Street Pianos by Sebastian

Hi ho everyone! Sebastian here to share one of my odysseys. Well, perhaps odyssey isn’t the correct term. Maybe quest is a better choice. Or pursuit or expedition. Anyhoo . . . I digress.

A few whiles back I learned that my fair city had something called The Raleigh Street Piano Project. Basically, old pianos were acquired (or saved as the case may be), painted in very creative ways and placed in various outside locations for the wanderer to enjoy for a short amount of time.

I wanted to find them all. I talked Ginger and Jay into coming along, although they had to drive themselves because they are much, much, much too gigantic to fit into my mini. (Although I think it would be quite amusing to see them squished together in the back!)

This is the first piano I found.

It was sitting all alone and I thought someone should play us a song. Let’s get something clear here. Ginger doesn’t play. She would say she knows one song, but I don’t think that really counts. I called on someone who actually had some lessons at one time. Not too bad, really.

Then we went in search of another.

We found it here – right on the plaza of the performing arts center.

I thought it was quite colorful.

Since there were a total of six pianos, I thought we could quite easily visit them all. The next one was this one. It was in pretty sad shape but very nicely painted. It was up to me to give it some tender loving care.

Perhaps the brightest one was this one with the big eye.

I liked its restful spot in the park – almost like it belonged there.

Check out the butterflies on this piano near the children's museum.

The quote on the bench reads:
“Change is the end result of all true learning.” ~ Leo Buscaglia

Finally – our sixth and final find in the heart of the city.

I coaxed another tune out of Jay. (Pssst. He doesn’t know too many.)

And that my friends is just one of the adventures I have had lately!

I hope you enjoyed coming along for our ‘search and find’ of Raleigh’s Street Pianos.

Until next time,

    1. Hi Mouse,

I thought it was a very very good idea too. Yep, I think it would have been very slow going if they had been in my car. Just getting them in and out would be a major undertaking!

  2. Hi Sebastian,

Now that looked like a fun outing. Hmm, Miss Ginger and Mr. Jay squished in the back of your new Mini - now that would be knee slapping funny, I can just see them SQUISHED. But you wouldn't want your brand new tires going flat. Giggle.

    1. Hi Prudence,

It was quite fun and I think you would have enjoyed coming along as well. Yep, squishing them in the back would have been hilarious but flat tires on my brand new car would not be very funny. I'm glad you thought of that - just another reason for them to drive their own selves. :D

      hugs dear friend,
      Sebastian

  3. What a music filled day you had. I wish I could hear Jay play. Sounds like a nice thing to do for the city. Sebastian you and I could have played a duet. We could have made something up and called it heavy rock!!!!!!

    1. Hi dear Wilbur,

I think you live much too far away! If my mini would float, I would drive across the ocean to come and get you and we could go on adventures together.

I will have to say it was fun searching for the pianos. We heard one or two people play that were really quite talented too.

You have a good idea about the duet - or a band! Yes! We could play 'bear rock' or we could be 'cuddly crooners' or hm-m-m-m, I'm going to have to think this over.

      hugs,
      Sebastian

    2. Hi Wilbur,

I think you have a very good idea for a duet! I will have to practice a lot first though. We could have a name for our group. Perhaps we should call it Bear Rock!

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  4. What fun! I hope your mini ran well for your expedition. You should learn a song on the piano in secret, then wow Ginger the next time you run into one of those pianos! ;)

    1. Hi K. Joy,

It was fun! I'll have to think about learning a song. I think I would have to jump from key to key since bear paws aren't very good for tickling the ivories. Oh and the pianos all have new homes now so I'll be on the lookout for another adventure!

      hugs,
      Sebastian
