Awesome.

A few days ago when I went to visit my dad I rounded a curve and was surprised by these:

It was an awesome sight. So awesome that I pulled off on the side of the road and got out of the car to take some photos.

I had hoped that this would be the summer that I would be fortunate enough to see a field of sunflowers in bloom but I fully expected that if it were to happen, it would be at the Biltmore Estate.

Who knew that I would find them growing so beautifully by the side of the road?

I don’t know what moves you, but I know for a lot of people it is the sight of something that fills them with wonder. Sometimes it is a mountaintop view and sometimes it is standing on the shore and seeing the expanse of ocean all the way to the horizon. Then there is always the Grand Canyon which is hard to beat for filling a person with wonder.

Little did I know that I would be awestruck in much the same way by a field of sunflowers. The feeling wasn’t diminished at all by the traffic rushing by. Maybe it was even enhanced by it. I was absolutely thrilled to stand among these sunflowers and see them in every direction.

I thought about these flowers and snippets of a quote came to mind – something about keeping your face to the sunshine and not seeing the shadows. I thought it would be an appropriate description for these photos.

When I Googled it, I had to laugh out loud. Here is the quote in its entirety. “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do.” ~ Helen Keller

Awesome.

  1. Yes...awesome indeed! I think we just need to keep our hearts and minds open to beauty and not take anything for granted. Beauty absolutely surrounds us! The sunflowers are lovely, all of them posing for their picture to be captured, but so is a field of dandelions, only a weed because they are prolific. It's all in the eye of the beholder. :) Love the quote!

    1. Hi Jeanie,

I think you would have loved standing there among those sunflowers too! Maybe a field of anything would be just as impressive - although those sunflower were at eye level and that's just plain ol' in-your-face fun!

      Thanks so much!

  2. I grew up in Kansas. In my latte teens, well over forty years ago, fields of sunflowers started springing up. I was in love with wheat fields and would often on a weekend take my Pinto car, (remember those?), and just go driving in the country. I lived in Wichita so I had to drive a bit. I always found wheat fields awesome. I have to admit though, when the sunflowers started showing up......well they are just dazzling on a clear blue day. That yellow is beyond belief. Haven't seen one in over 30 years. Wish I had been there with you. So glad you had the experience.

    1. Hi TerriSue,

What an interesting perspective! I can see how wheat fields would inspire that kind of reaction. Maybe I'll see one of those one day too! We were in Kansas quite a few years ago and I found the people there very friendly - at least the ones I met. We enjoyed Kansas a lot.

A Pinto? Yep, I remember that little car - never had one though. It would have been fun to have you along.

      Thanks so much!

  3. There was a field of these that grew every year until this past year...now they're building condos on the lot. :[ As though we need more condos. There is a remaining small garden of these on another side road near my house at a local nursery and flower farm. They are beautiful. :D

    1. Hi otterine,

Firstly, congrats on winning the dollhouse competition. I voted for you - several times!
As for the sunflowers, it sounds like it was wonderful to be able to see them every day when they bloomed. Too bad about the condos replacing such a neat sight, but that flower farm sounds like a cool place to visit.

Thanks for stopping by and for reading!

  4. I do love a good field of sunflowers :o) Reminds me of summer holidays in France, driving down through fields and fields of them at the sides of the motorways, brightening the journey.
