I have almost always had a dog, sometimes maybe more than one. Through the years they have been my playmates, my companions, my confidants, my consolers. They have sat quietly by when I despaired and ran joyfully with me when I was happy.
When our last dog passed from this life, we wondered if we could live without a dog. The answer was yes, we could. Then we wondered if we really wanted to. The answer was no, we didn’t. Topher came along and this phrase I read somewhere echoes in my mind “that the pain of loss will have been worth the joy of attachment”.
So here I am with an example of the aforementioned joy.
When Topher first came to live with us, there were times when we had to leave him at home. Since he was recently parted from his siblings, I found a forgotten, never-played-with teddy bear about his size to keep him company. Now when we leave him, he has become accustomed to having his bear with him.
And when we return and open the door to the room he stays in, he comes out and then he promptly goes back in and brings out the bear. Once he is free, he makes sure the bear is free too. This is no small feat since the bear is nearly his same size.
When we go upstairs Topher follows us. Just the other day, he didn’t come up when we did. He lingered. When he finally did come up, I wondered why he had tarried. I turned on the light in the stairwell and found my answer. His bear was sitting on the very first step. He had brought the bear out of the room but was only able to get him up the first step. It was amazing to me that he had attempted it. It was quite a tender sight, seeing Topher’s bear resting at the bottom of the steps waiting for someone to bring him the rest of the way.
Yep, this dog has his own teddy bear.
Ginger what a precious story. What a darling little dog. I'm sure he is your constant companion.

Topher is adorable! I'm sure he has a big place in your hearts.
ReplyDeleteHi Lynda,
DeleteOh yes, definitely - a big place. Over the years he might develop some interesting quirks.....like many people!

Everybeary needs a teddy bear, Miss Ginger. You didn't finish the story - did you or Mr. Jay go down and bring Teddy upstairs for Topher?
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Prudence
Hi Prudence,
DeleteWell of course we did! Marched promptly down those stairs and brought the bear up. Everyone needs a little help now and then. :)

Hahaha, that's so cute... and I completely understand... my cat has a stuffed Chihuahua that he "adopted" when he was a kitten.
ReplyDeleteHi Heather,
DeleteThat is tooo funny! A cat with a Chihuahua! I'll bet he's a good caretaker too. My daughter would love that story. I'll have to tell her.
hugs,
~ginger
Awww... I'm such a pushover! I can picture our dog doing the same thing. I had tears in my eyes! What a sweetheart!! And it is SO fun that the Bearbits blog has a Bear!

Hi Tricia,
DeleteAnimals can be so funny. You wonder what they are thinking and then when you think you know, it's so surprising. Never a dull moment around here. Thanks so much for reading.

That is so adorable! Little Bit is pretty picky with his toys, but he has a little stuffed dog he really likes. If we aren't giving him enough attention (I don't see how that's possible) he'll start running around the house with it until someone starts playing with him.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
DeleteTopher has a whole basket full of toys and he knows they are his too. He pulls them all out but for some reason I haven't been able to get him to put them back! :D

Oh that is so sweet. I lost my precious Teddy right before Christmas. He had a stuffed rabbit he loved and carried around. He brought the rabbit to me the day he died and put it in my lap. Looking at me to take care of his buddy. So sad but so precious. Animals can steal your heart can't they. Topher is precious. What kind of dog is he?
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon,
DeleteI am sorry about your Teddy. I read about his passing and I was so sad. Poor Teddy. I know you miss him. I miss all mine! Yes, most definitely they are quite the little thieves. :)
Topher came at a good time for us and both of us here love his company. He is half Chihuahua and half Poodle. What a card!
hugs,
~ginger
Love your Topher stories Ginger, he is quite a rascal I'm sure. Most all of my dogs, past & present, have taken up with a special stuffed toy or blanket just like a human child. Our Kip, a Pom & Maltese mix, has a stuffed squirrel he treats like his baby. He washes it, sleeps with it, and will try to run out the door with it at times. I thought Topher was part Cairn terrier, like Toto - a poodle & cheewaawaa is indeed an interesting mix!
ReplyDeleteHi KittyAnnArt,
DeleteI'm glad you like the Topher stories! He is a rascal and an imp and a charmer! It's fun to hear about the stuffed animal real animals adopt. I think Topher would like a squirrel too!
Never a dull moment around here!
Thanks for reading!

Hi Topher, I'm glad you have a bear friend (as well as Sebastian of course, we can't forget him). I think it's really cool of you to have a bear friend that you're kind to, 'cos sometimes we're bears are afraid of doggies, as your ilk tends to chew rather than love. I hope you have many happy years companionship with your bear - has it a name? Gruff maybe?
ReplyDeleteHugs to you, Gruff, Sebastian and your Tumins too,
Jock
Hi Jock,
DeleteTopher asked me to send you a reply because he says he has too many things to watch over to spend time typing. He is glad that you approve of his bear and he will look after it. His bear doesn't have a name yet but your suggestion will be taken under serious consideration. Sebastian says "It's about time!"
hugs to you and yours!
~ginger
Well of *course* he has a beary friend, he would be a member of the Bearbits household without one, silly!

ReplyDeleteHi Noni,
