Old Valentines

A few months ago, we received a very generous gift of antique Valentines from a friend. Sebastian thinks that since Valentine’s Day is so close we should share a few of them with you. He had his conditions of course. He wanted to be the Valentine presenter – kind of like the Vanna White of bearbits.

The box is a treasure trove of different kinds of valentines from the late 1920’s. That’s my best guess from what I can gather from the information on the cards. They are really quite remarkable. Alas, Sebastian is chomping at the bit for me to get on with it so here we go.

This first one is a dimensional valentine. I love these. There is so much detail in them including different layers, lots of colors and embossing too.

The next couple of examples are called honeycombs. You’ll see why.

Here we have a couple of antique paper lace valentines. Pretty cute!

The above examples have been elaborate and romantic and I am partial to the dimensional ones but Sebastian and I think the mechanical ones are in an entertaining class all by themselves. Of all the mechanical ones in the box, we think this is the funniest. Check out this cute little doggie offering “A token of Affection”.

Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

And with a little wiggle of his neck ribbon, his expression changes dramatically! Too funny!

This last one is the largest and most elaborate dimensional valentine in the box. It needs a little bit of repair in a place or two. but still, I think it’s pretty impressive.

Now Sebastian wants to have a conference with me. He says it has something to do with pirates. Pirates? It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and I’m wondering if he thinks a pirate might come along and steal my heart. No? Hm-m-m-m. I wonder what he wants to talk about. Once I get it figured out, I will be sure to let you know.

  1. Sebastian, your Mom is very lucky to receive these treasures. Did you look to see if any LOVE notes were on the back. I think who ever received these must have had a special spot in some ones heart.

    1. Hi Wilbur,

You know what I think? I think they were for a teacher. They didn't have too many sentiments written on them - mostly just a name. They are awfully pretty though arent' they?

      hugs,
      Sebastian

    1. Hi Kikka,

Happy Valentine's Day right back at ya! The doggie is really funny when you do the eyes real fast. There's a kitty cat one that does the same thing but he looks even funnier because I don't see too many kitties panting! :D

      hugs,
      Sebastian

  3. Eeek, that dog is creepy! We thought it was going to be a post all about old people in love, given the title, we're not sure what's worse, wrinkly kisses or creepy dogs...

Please excuse my grumpy young friend Sebastian. I don't know what's got into him. I expect he's just getting excited about going away and that's not for another month or more. The next few weeks will be unbearable, ho, ho.
These are lovely cards and quite fascinating. My mother collected postcards from before the first world war and they were fascinating too, though not half so elaborate.
    Hugs,

    1. Hi Jock,

Me? Soppy? Okay, I admit to maybe just a little but I'll chalk up your grumpiness to the fact that you still have a little bit of a wait before you can go on your adventure. I sure hope you take lots of pictures!

Have a biscuit and wish Miss Ann a Happy Valentine's Day!

      hugs,
      Sebastian
