Hiding in Plain Sight

We haven’t given them names, but we still have two baby deer living in our back yard.

One reason we haven’t named them is we can’t tell them apart.

These photos were taken over several days at various times.

I think the older and bigger they get the more wary they are of us. In other words, they are getting smarter!

Some days they hide in plain sight and other days they blend in with the vegetation.

One evening one of them walked into the weeds and seemed to disappear.

It reminded me of a scene from the movie Field of Dreams.

I hope you enjoy these photos and your weekend!

Until next time,

  1. These are lovely photos Ginger. The fauns seem to be thriving. I must admit I had my concerns at the mother leaving them, but she obviously comes back to feed them regularly. I'll be interested to see the rest of their story.

    1. Hi Alan,

They are growing quite quickly and I too, was a bit concerned when we didn't see their mother for a few days, but I now believe she was visiting in the wee hours of the morning when we were sound asleep. Let's hope this continues until she and they find their merry way to the next nest!

  2. Awww!!! you are very lucky to be able to observe them at such close quarters. I hope they stay there for awhile. Do you see their mum come to feed them?

    1. Hi Kay,

We have seen the mother from time to time. I thought I caught a glimpse of her in the pitch dark of the night. We also saw her this morning. So sweet when the babies are nearby!

  3. How blessed you are to have such an experience. Twins are not common but it does happen more than you would think. Back home in northwestern NJ we lived out in the country and a Doe had triplets, they loved coming in our yard and eating my lilacs.

Have a blessed and safe holiday weekend.

    1. Hi Joyce,

It is quite amazing to be such suburbanites and have this little family in our yard just living life!

I hope you and yours have a nice weekend too!

  4. They just look so sweet and gentle. What does Topher think of them.... does he try and chase them off of his property? ;)

    1. Hi Jeanie,

During the day, they are still and quiet and Topher doesn't know they are around. If he does see them, sometimes he wants to chase them but he stops immediately when we tell him "no". That in itself is impressive. Maybe he thinks it's his job and is relieved when we tell him to stop! The deer are sweet!

  6. Oh my! What a exciting event, watching the babies grow up, the mama knew she was in the *right* yard when she chose yours! Sounds like Topher is growing up too and minding his mom & dad.

My little dog went nuts the other day when we took him to the nearby beach where dogs and horses are allowed. He'd never seen a horse and I do believe he was really frightened by the hugeness of them, he barked once then jumped into my husband's arms for protection! :)

    1. Hi Ani,

It is certainly an interesting diversion from our normal way of going about things. We're always checking on them and wondering where they've chosen to hide during the day.

I think Topher would be frightened by horse too!
