Fairy Halloween Circus

Today is the day I can now show the finished bears&boxes piece I have been working on. The concept, provided by the recipient, turned out to be a very fitting name as well.

The front of the was one of those situations that could succeed or fail if you don’t hold your mouth right.  I held my breath quite a lot.

This slightly angled photo shows one of my favorite details of this piece.

Here’s a close up of it – a sign for tickets!

The back – with all the tiny raised painted stars.

Here’s the left side of the open box – with various acts performing.

fhc_5

This photo shows the tightrope walkers (potion bottles) and the circus wagon with various  ‘fairy’ animals.

fhc_6

The right side of the box has it’s own performers
– including the fairy Yellophants with wings

and the aerialists that are also fairies.

Here’s the fairy bear that occupies center stage in the
Fairy Halloween Circus.

I decided to add glitter to her wings  and in a few other places throughout the circus.

Here’s the complete box open with all the performers from tightrope walkers to monkey gymnast to flying Yellophants and a fairy bear.

It was fun being under the big top!

Various and Sundry

bits and bobs occupy today’s post. A seemingly random collection.

I have plans for these five frames.

It should all make sense in the end – or rather I hope it does. Or maybe I hope it doesn’t. I think it must be late.

Sometimes it’s better for me not to think too hard or else I might begin to wonder what the heck I am doing sometimes . . . sometimes?

As Jay says, “I’d like to know what goes on in that mind of yours.”

These were tiny wooden spools until I took a saw to them.  Poor things.  But I have more so it’s okay.

In any case, I’m nearly finished which is a good place to be as I have several other projects that I need to get underway.

Here we are again with the frames.  And how did you spend your Friday afternoon?

I’ll be posting photos of this completed project very shortly. I hope by the end of the week.

No, these are not elephants.  They are yellophants.

Happy Monday!

Crafting Choreography

It’s been a few days since I gave an update on the current work in progress. Who knew that choreography would come in stages? (Yes, that was a terrible, terrible pun.)

It’s not actual choreography, of course. I guess you might call it crafting choreography.

It was a matter of prepping these petite ballerinas and waiting.

Then painting them and waiting.

More painting and waiting.

Finally, adding the final touch of glitter and waiting.

Now it’s on to the dance routine – in a manner of speaking.

I’m sure there will be more waiting involved.

Until later,

Shine and Shimmer

This is what’s on my desk at the moment. I tried to capture the shine and shimmer of these wings. I’m still deciding if I want to do more to them or leave them as they are.  I’ve got nine vials of glitter on my desk – just waiting for me to make up my mind.

Maybe I’ll sleep on it. The decision, not the wings.

Until later,

Looks a Lot Like the Others

Many of the bears&boxes pieces that I create look a lot alike at the beginning. That is because the box is either unfinished or a cigar box that I have stripped down or intend to cover. It is the start of the transformation.

There are times I know right away where I am going and then there are times I get ideas along the way.  The outside of this piece began with a vague idea that crystallized fairly quickly and it allowed me to use a tried and true technique (adding texture)

as well as a new one (applying a very detailed image to the front) which is not yet adequately photographed.

And just like that –

after several hours and/or days of painting

– it no longer looks like any other piece I have done before.

Now I am revisiting one of my favorite processes of transferring text to the edges.

It’s a process that requires patience which I discovered early on when I was impatient once or twice. Ah, the benefits of experience.

New Projects Underway

Baby it’s cold outside. For us, for whom 13°F/-10°C is out of the ordinary. Looking at the fire burning keeps me thinking warm thoughts.

Topher has the right idea. Just curl up in a ball in a cozy spot and hope it all passes uneventfully soon.

In the meantime, I have several projects underway. Here’s the start of one.  It’s a good time to stay inside and make some headway.

Before you know it, it will be time to pack up for a show or two.  As of now, I will be heading to three shows this year. I’ve listed them on the right side of this blog if you are interested. Hopefully, by that time we can honestly say springtime, and perhaps some warmer temperatures, will have arrived. If not in earnest, at least technically by one day!

I Sat There

Hi ho. Sebastian here. I’ve been thinking. Yep, thinking and thinking. 2014 was certainly an interesting year from this bear’s perspective.

There were many times I sat for a photo and it never quite made it here on bearbits. I aims to fix that and show you some of the places I sat. You might want to put your seatbelt on because some of them are pretty odd. Here they are in no particular order.

Here I am in 221B Baker Street, London.  Recognize that address?  It’s the home of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes.  If you look real close you can see me on the table.  I have no idea why you-know-who is looking at me with a magnifying glass.

This is me sitting on the air filter of Tow Mater.  If you like Pixar’s cars, you know who this feller is.  I met lots of Cars stars that day.

Me on a doggie sculpture.  He’s not quite as fluffy as my friend Topher.

This bluebird was for measuring the height of little ones who wanted to ride Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom.  I thought he made a pretty good ride all by himself but apparently there were very few my size who could ride him.

I went from things my size to things that were huge.  Just lugging these dominoes around to play a game would be a workout.  Thankfully, I didn’t have to move them!

This was the only time I’ve seen a mushroom just my size.  I sat there very carefully.

You might have to get that magnifying glass out to find me in this one.  I’ll give you a hint if you need help.  Just take a ‘step’ in the right direction.

I couldn’t resist this giant ice cream cone in what used to be East Berlin!  It was a perfect spot to perch but very cold – the weather, not the ice cream!

Not everyone can say they sat inside a gate in the Berlin Wall, but I can.  It helps to be little sometimes.

This wasn’t weird, it was yummy. Warm Apple Strudel with ice cream.

With the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background, it was a beautiful blue sky kind of day.

This was taken on a playground whose theme was The Little Mermaid.  I’m still not sure about this one.

Do you remember when I rode on the giant turtle?  I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

This bear was huge.  Huge!  You can tell just how big he was when you see where I’m sitting.  See me there on his left arm?  Near the Panda?  My my.  Did I tell you he was huge?

This is something you don’t see very often.  It’s an empty Underground train car in London.  Well, empty except for me and my photographer.

Now at last, here I am with Paddington tipping his hat to you to say so long for now.

I  hope you enjoyed seeing where I sat in 2014 .  I intend to sit some more in 2015.  I bet you do too!

love & hugs,

sebastiansigns
