I don’t know if I was left when I was born, but I know I was left in school. Left at the blackboard, left at my desk.
Left.
Left as in leftie. Left-handed. A Southpaw.
When I was younger, I enjoyed being left. It made me different. At times, it was also awkward but I never wished I wasn’t a leftie.
Did you know that only about 10% of the population is left-handed?
I don’t know how they classified these folks because I can do quite a number of things with my right hand. I can use scissors and cut with the best of them. I bat right-handed. I throw a ball with my right hand, too.
But . . .
I do write with my left hand; use a fork with my left hand and a sewing needle too.
I wonder if that statistic also applies to the alien population. Some people think lefties are aliens.
Why, oh why, am I sharing this with you? Now of all times? We’ve been able to get through every post I have written and I have never had to venture into these waters before. Alas, the time has arrived.
Today.
Yes, today.
Today is National Left Handers Day.
I don’t think there is a Right Handers Day. Left Handers Day is like having a Mother’s Day or a Father’s Day. I once asked my mom why didn’t they have a “Kids Day” and she replied, “Every day is kids’ day.” So maybe every day is Right Handers Day? Which one are you?
No matter. To me you are all special whether you are left-handed, right-handed or if you are in the 1% that is ambidextrous.
Have a Happy National Left Handers Day! Go and hug your favorite leftie!
I'm a right hander. If I wrote with my left hand you wouldn't be able to read it.
ReplyDeleteHappy lefty to you.
Hugs
Hi Kays Kids,
DeleteYou must have typed that with your right hand because I could read it perfectly! Ha ha! Thanks dear!
~ginger
I'm a southpaw too! but I use scissors in my right hand (they didn't make left handed ones when I was little); I catch right-handed and can use the computer mouse in either hand with no problem. My bank issues cheque-books for left handers which open the other way, which is handy (left-handy!)x
ReplyDeleteHi Lynda,
DeleteHLD to you! I think I might have been able to use the left handed scissors okay but my mom taught me to sew and she was right handed and she had a hard time figuring out how to show me things backwards. So it's right handed scissors for me. I've never heard of a cheque book for lefties. Yea for your bank!
Thanks my fellow southpaw!

Hi, I hope you enjoyed your lefties day. We in Britain use our forks in our left hands too - even those of us who are right handed. We find all that swapping around you guys do to be quite amusing!
ReplyDeleteOne of our favourite authors is Bill Bryson, a very funny American who settled here partly because he's left handed and he finally found a country that agreed with him on which hand to use with a fork. If you haven't read it already then try his book "A walk in the woods." It's a fantastically funny account of walking the Appalachian Trail.
Alan
Hi Alan,
DeleteThank you for that info. I know all of you enjoy watching us Americans eat doing that table dance with the utensils but as you say, I sort of fit in over there in that area. Me driving there would still be a very dangerous thing though! Ha ha!
I will have to check out that book - especially since it's funny and about the Appalachian Trail too!
Thanks for the recommendation!

Happy National Left Handers Day ginger from your Right hander friend xx
ReplyDeleteHi Elanor,
DeleteThanks for that! HLD to you too - even though you are right handed.
Have a productive day!
~ginger, the leftie
Hi Ginger,
ReplyDeleteYippee, National Left Handers Day - I go one step further - left sided. Can hear better with my left ear, left eye is stronger...and it drives Hubby crazy, but I automatically turn left when exiting an elevator. (o: Honest.
When we lived in CA there was a Left Handed Shop on Pier 39 in San Francisco, it was fantastic. I bought a left handed ruler - so much easier.
Hugs to all the "Lefties out there". We rule! We are unique.
Hugs ♥
Hi The Bear's Blog,
DeleteThat's very interesting to learn, especially about the elevator bit. I'll have to see if I have that tendency next time I'm on an elevator. I never thought of it before. I always figured I just get lost easy getting off! Now maybe I have a legitimate reason to be whacky!
I don't know if I have seen a left handed ruler but I can see how it might be helpful.
Happy Left Handers Day to you, my fellow leftie!
~ginger
Oooooo! I'll have to let Corinne know that there is a day just for her, too. Our leftie baby! Like you, she also does a lot with her right hand.
ReplyDeleteSee you soon!
Cheryl
Hi Cheryl,
DeleteGive my best wishes to Corrine for a very Happy Left Handers Day!
Safe travels to you all!

Happy Lefty Day to you! I guess I am ambidextrous - I generally use my right hand, but I can write pretty easily with my left, too. The handwriting is definitely legible, but I usually only write with my left hand for fun. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Kay Joy,
DeleteI suppose you will be in luck if you ever have to rely on your left hand in case of an emergency. Good for you! You are probably in a very small minority of people - very special people! But then, I knew that already!
Thanks!
~ginger
I'm relatively ambidextrous, and use my mouse with my left hand while I write with my right. I can write with my left hand too. I've rowed on both sides of boats for years, and I often swap things between hands when I'm working. I think that makes me weird ;o)
ReplyDeleteHi Katy,
DeleteOh, that's what makes you weird? Ha ha! I think it's fabulous but then, with all you do, why am I not surprised?
I'd bet when people aren't looking, you have a rotary cutter in each hand zipping through mounds of fabric at the same time!
I guess it wouldn't get you very far to row on only one side of the boat?! :D
I sometimes use the mouse in my left hand too. It gives my right hand an assist every now and again.
You keep it up! The world needs more like you.
~ginger
I could comment, but being her Dad I'd only get into trouble. When she was a child she would be listening to her bed-time story whilst drawing pictures, but if we dared skip a sentence of a favourite book woe betide us!
DeleteAlan
Hi Alan,
DeleteI can believe it! Lucky dad - lucky daughter!
~ginger
Sorry I missed National Lefthanders Day (guess I must be misleftic). Anyway, all the lefties I know are very imaginative, creative folk, so you're 'right' in that group!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kayzy
Hi Kayzy,
DeleteNo worries! Thanks for stopping by!
